Ghosts of the Brandywine
Northern Delaware keeps its stories close. At Rockwood, the Gothic Revival mansion now preserved as a New Castle County park and museum, Victorian rooms and gardens set a fitting stage for an autumn visit.
Near Cooch’s Bridge, a long-told local legend speaks of a headless soldier. It is folklore, handed down rather than documented, and it is best enjoyed as such.
In Wilmington, Old Swedes Church and its burial ground carry history that needs no embellishment: a congregation and churchyard recognized by the National Park Service as places of genuine historic significance.
Ghost stories are traditions, not evidence. For the documented history, start here:

At Home · Entertaining
The Art of Entertaining After Dark
Halloween at home can be elegant rather than theatrical. Lay an ivory runner down the table, set black taper candles at varied heights, and scatter pears among dark florals for shape and color.
Keep the menu to a few refined appetizers that can be passed or set out, so the evening belongs to conversation and candlelight.

Style · After Dark
Behind the Mask
Not a costume; a point of view. Black velvet, considered accessories and one dramatic detail say Halloween with far more polish than anything from a bag. Dress for the evening, then let the mask do the rest.

Sunday · November 1
The Morning After
Let November arrive slowly. Sleep in, brew something warm, take a walk through the leaves and leave the candles for one more evening. A slow Sunday is its own kind of magic.
