A Homegrown Classic:
Brandywine Furniture at 50
For half a century, this Wilmington original has been helping people turn rooms into places worth coming home to.
City to Coast Magazine / Home & Design

Fifty years is a remarkable thing in the life of a city. Neighborhoods evolve. Homes change hands. Styles come and go. Yet the desire to create a welcoming place of our own remains wonderfully constant.
Since 1976, Brandywine Furniture has been part of that story. The family-owned Wilmington business celebrates its golden anniversary in 2026, marking five decades of helping Delaware Valley shoppers bring comfort, character and individual style into the spaces they call home.
A lasting philosophy
The personal touch never goes out of style
Furniture is personal. A sofa is where the family gathers. A dining table becomes the setting for celebrations and ordinary Tuesday nights alike. A bedroom is where the pace of life finally slows. Brandywine’s philosophy recognizes that choosing pieces for those spaces should begin with listening, not pressure. The retailer describes its approach as relaxed, friendly and focused on what works for each customer’s home and lifestyle.

A look for every chapter
From living-room seating and bedroom pieces to dining furniture, mattresses and decorative accents, the store’s offerings reflect the many ways a home evolves. First apartments, growing families, empty nests, reinventions: every chapter seems to call for a fresh way of living. Brandywine combines range and value with practical services, including purchase options and delivery arrangements, to help people get from inspiration to a finished room.

Rooted in Wilmington
The business’s roots are local, and its reach extends across the region. Today its North Market Street showroom welcomes shoppers looking for the right piece, a complete-room refresh or simply ideas. In an era when so much shopping can feel anonymous, a family-run store built around personal attention has a particular appeal.
A family affair, every day
What gives that personal attention its character is simply who provides it. Margaret Raico, the company’s president and the matriarch of the family operation, and Chuck Messick, its vice president, are in the business every day — officers by title, and on the floor as a matter of routine. At Brandywine, being family owned is less a description on a sign than a fact of daily life: the people who own the store are the people who work in it, and the welcome a shopper receives is not delegated.
Fifty years after opening its doors, Brandywine Furniture’s story still returns to a simple proposition: a beautiful home is not defined by a single style or price tag. It is defined by the life unfolding inside it. And there is always room for what is next.
