The Steady Hand
Ray Aungst on family, fair shakes, and the quiet art of protecting what matters most
Expert in the Field · Summer 2026 · N°01
Insurance, for most of us, lives in the language of fine print and quarterly premiums, a transaction filed somewhere between a utility bill and a passing thought. Ray Aungst would like to change that. Sit with him for a few minutes and the conversation drifts, almost inevitably, away from coverage limits and toward something more elemental: the families he serves, the team he coaches, the community he calls home. For Ray, the policy is simply the paperwork. The work is the people.
A lifelong Pennsylvanian and father of four, Ray runs Aungst Insurance, an Allstate agency rooted in Delaware and built on a single, almost old-fashioned premise: that an honest agent, looking out for an honest family, is worth far more than the cheapest line item on a quote sheet. "When I talk to families like my own, multiple cars, young drivers, a house to protect, they want a fair shake," he says. "They want to know they're covered properly, that they're not going to lose everything if something happens. That's the whole job."
The Inside Joke About "Full Coverage"
Ask Ray about the most common misconception in his trade and he laughs, the kind of laugh that comes from hearing the same phrase a thousand times. "There's an inside joke among agents," he says. "There's no such thing as full coverage. It only exists in people's minds. Really, it doesn't exist at all."
What he's describing, gently, is the gap between what a policy promises and what a family actually needs, a gap that widens quietly with every new driver added, every renovation completed, every milestone reached. His role, as he sees it, is to close that gap before life ever forces the question. "I'm not here to sell you the cheapest thing and sacrifice your coverage," he explains. "And I'm not here to over-insure you, either. I'm here to find what's adequate, what's affordable, and what actually protects what you've built."
"Community is where people come together for the betterment of everybody who lives in the area."
A Family of Six, A Field of Soccer
The Aungst household runs deep. Ray and his wife are raising four children, ages twenty-four, eighteen, thirteen, and six, a span of years that means he is, simultaneously, the father of an adult and the father of a first-grader. He has spent the better part of a decade coaching youth soccer, nearly ten years of weekends and weeknights spent on sidelines, learning, perhaps, the same lesson he offers his clients: that showing up consistently is its own form of protection.
"Community, to me, is the people you meet every day who are similar to yourself," he says, when asked to define a word that often defies definition. "It's the families whose kids go to school with yours. It's the business owners sponsoring the local baseball teams, raising money for the schools. Community is where people come together for the betterment of everybody who lives in the area."
The Tommy Ellis Memorial Foundation
Among Ray's quieter passions is a partnership that traces back more than three decades. The Ellis family has been part of his life since high school in Pennsylvania, where Tom Ellis served as the wrestling coach at Sun Valley High, a fixture of the program, a mentor to generations of young athletes. Tom passed away unexpectedly last year. The foundation that bears his name now funds scholarships and community work in his memory.
Ray has woven the foundation into the fabric of his agency. For every completed insurance quote that mentions the Tommy Ellis Memorial Foundation, Aungst Insurance makes a donation in the prospect's name. It is, in the truest sense, business as community, a transaction that becomes a tribute.
The Steady Hand
What you notice, talking to Ray, is the absence of the hard sell. There is no urgency in his voice, no pressure manufactured for the sake of the close. Instead there is a kind of practiced stillness, the calm of someone who has spent enough years in the business to know that families don't need to be sold; they need to be heard.
In an industry that too often defaults to slogans and savings claims, Ray Aungst is a quieter proposition. He offers what every family hopes for and so few find: an agent who shows up, asks the right questions, remembers your kids' names, and leaves you with the rare and underrated feeling that someone, somewhere, is actually paying attention.
